The Society for the Advancement of Young
Writers (SAYW) is devoted to the inspiration and
education of young students interested in the
craft of creative writing. SAYW believes in
community involvement and encourages fellow
professional writers to take an active role in our
local schools so that our stories may inspire the
next generation of writers.

The Society for the Advancement of Young
Writers was born out of a desire to give elementary aged children a chance to publish the stories they create. Since then it has grown in scope to include outreach to schools and curriculum development.

Founded by author and editor, Lyman Feero in April, 2009,  the society strives to reverse the legacy the Bush administration left our grammar schools. Too many students only get taught the essentials to pass state and federal assessment tests. The art of creative thinking presents itself very infrequently in contemporary lesson plans. Instead critical thinking has supplanted creativity. It is counterintuitive that classrooms couldn’t have both, but changing the modern paradigm takes time and commitment.

SAYW is committed to just that task.
Through its programs, SAYW will inspire the young writers whose creative interests are on the brink of being abandoned. By providing information that allows teachers to dovetail creative writing efforts  to the assessment learning, a generation of young writers may have the motivation that would otherwise be left behind. SAYW, members believe creative writing can return to the classroom and assessments will only improve.

"The stories of childhood leave an indelible impression, and their author always has a niche in the temple of memory from which the image is never cast out..." ~Howard Pyle
